Food Diary: Penang Food Bound May 2012

Wednesday, September 12, 2012

Hello, i'm here blogging at the eleventh hour. By now i should be busy working on my assignments instead of... I know. :) Anyway while patiently waiting for my 3d max render to be done, why not slip some time out for me to blog a little?! Nope, apparently a very long post about FOOD. This blogpost must be quite odd and fresh for you people as I don't usually post about local food(I find them kinda boring at times). However, Penang is my lovely hometown that filled with lotsa NICE NICE NICE FOOD!

Yes i love all the hawker food in Penang! I can eat them every meal from breakfast to supper! Penang food is simply delicious, this is why Penang is known as food paradise. I literally miss every Penang food and of course those home cooked dish by Didi(My filipino maid) whenever i'm in KL! Home is always the best!

Couple months ago, i sort of kidnaped le boyf go back to Penang with me. (Nay Kidnap sounds really serious and forceful, exaggerating much lol) In fact it was a last minute plan for Nuffnang's event back in Penang. So i persuaded him to go with me, food and accommodation all provided by me! Pretty good offer right? You know why, cause he will be staying with me, at the Teng's Crib. Such a smart girlfriend i am!

It was also the first time for him to officially meet my father and brother. (FYI, Daddy Teng & Brother Teng hardly leave the island, that's why!) Although we have been together for more or less a year time, however le boyf has not really met all my family members except for my sisters. So i told dad, my boyf wants to meet you. Daddy Teng was kind enough to bring us out for dinner. Hehe

Our day start off with food, food, and food for all day and night long. Brought him to try out all my favorite hawker food in Penang.

#1 Bangkok Lane Mee Rebus

This Mee Rebus is the by far the best i have ever tired. I don't really into Indian/Malay food, their food are mostly spicy to me with all the spices and etc. But this tastes so sweet and sour a little with Lime. They have it in both Dry and Wet base. So we ordered each of them and exchanged. hehe

Next, something non related to food but a picture of mine at Celcom Xpax S.O.X Event.

#2 Toh Soon Cafe

A very random Kopi Tiam(Coffee Shop) at the lorong(alley) next to New lane that serves BEST COFFEE EVER!

Photobucket
This cup of Kopi Ping(Coffee with Milk, Ping is ice in Hokkien) & Kopi(coffee with milk) is like the best coffee!!! And also the first coffee that cause me INSOMNIA! No joke!
Their Kopi-O(Black Coffee) taste really good too!

Photobucket

What is the best thing to do with a Kopi at Kopi Tiam(coffee shop)??

Lai(Come in Hokkien), satu set telur(Half boiled egg), satu set Roti bakar and satu set Roti Kor Tau (Peanut Butter) with their home made Peanut butter jam. I loved their penut butter jam so much, reminded me how my Ah Ma(grandma) used to make many years back! We literrally enjoyed every moment while doing it with her. Although we were still a kid, nothing much could help actually, just simply fooling around the kitchen with the elder makes everything memorable.

Photobucket

This is the place where you can meet our Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng. I met him once there, felt a little star struck when i saw him. LOL

Photobucket
Hello Ah Eng Ko! (us penangites' friendly form of address)

Also this, Moses Chan! Boyf was so excited about his presence was there. He went all crazy about it, as he's a big TVB fan and he said Moses Chan were into the same line as he does, the Coffee Line! Lol. I didn't know about it until he pointed this picture to me! Well, you can see how awesome this Lorong Kopi is and became an Attraction in Penang.

Done with two meals, time to invade the malls. His first visit to the brand new mall in the island - Gurney Paragon!

One hour nap was good, Brother Teng then woke us up for dinner with Daddy Teng. Instead of having  those expensive Seafood, Daddy Teng brought us to one of the local seafood village at Tanjung Bungah. He emphasized that this was the only place that is not flooded around Tanjong Bungah area during tsuanami hits Penang back to year 2006. Because there's a 大伯公 temple here, keeps everyone and the temple SAVE! O.O

The next day, before we headed back to KL. We went for another half day food tour! Brought him to try out Penang Curry Mee. In Penang, the Curry Mee is pretty different compare to the one in KL, from the soup base, filling and the way they serve. Penang Curry Mee comes in White Coconut Milk and some chili on the side(for you to add, estimation all by yourself, depends you want it to be normal coconut base or spicy. I like it in Spicy though!) whereas KL's Curry Mee comes in Malay's Yellow Gulai(curry) with Chicken and Potato.

#5 HotBowl White Curry Mee

Vintage house that still able to be seen these days

Brought him to this laksa instead of the one at Air Itam. He asked if the one in Air Itam taste better and much famous, but it's the same to me! I somehow prefer this one, the one at Air Itam is SO DIRTY, eating at the market is okay, but i seriously cannot take eating next to the drain where you can see rats and cockroach anytime! No Way! Yet so far at Air Itam(i hardly go beyond my area, stay in my comfort zone most the time. LOL)

#7 Penang Road Laksa, Cendul & Rojak

So nay this 100000 times better to me! I eat them whenever i go back in Penang(here)! Not forgetting this is one of the tourist attraction too! Tourists more than locals every time i visit!

Photobucket

Photobucket
Rojak & Laksa!!! Orgasm!

This bowl of cendul worth a million under the hot sun!

After two meals, we were so full yet fond for something sweet. Decided to pay China House a visit since i have never been there before. We had our dessert tea time at Kopi C, there are many dishes to savour alongside an array of rich cakes and pastries displayed on a long table at its bakery.

#8 China House Penang

China House is one of the busiest dining and lifestyle outlets within the Unesco heritage zone of George Town. Occupying three refurbished colonial shop houses with facades facing Beach Street and Victoria Street, China House offers a great dining experience. There are five different dining areas besides a wine store, art spaces and a venue for live shows.

They served variety of cakes all by it's bakery

What else it could be? Earl Grey as always

Photobucket
One of the best Tiramisu in Penang, can beat the one in Alexis!

Photobucket

Explored around China House after our sweet tooth. The central section of China House was an outdoor courtyard connecting Kopi C to Canteen & Bar. Diners like to hang out in this courtyard which links up the shophouses from Beach Street to Victoria Street.

Dining by the outdoor courtyard by a water pond is a completely different experience, such an airy dining for day and nigh.

Photobucket

China House is a very long restaurant cafe which connects two shoplots together, so the other part also the most happening venue in China House is its Canteen & Bar which is popular for its live music and comedy performances.

While we were on the way back to KL, passed by Bidor for their famous duck thigh noodles. Wanted to order their crunchy Wu Kok(Fried Yam Ball), however we were too late, all of them already sold out left the noodles available by evening time.
